Elinor Frey

As part of Les Escales, the Festi Jazz International de Rimouski, presented by Québecor in collaboration with the City of Rimouski, is proud to present an evening of performances by Elinor Frey.

Elinor Frey is a musician of the first rank, who takes immense pleasure in exploring the thousand faces of her favourite instrument, the cello, as well as its distant relatives such as the viola da gamba.

An accomplished researcher and musicologist, she has also unearthed an impressive corpus of works that had fallen into oblivion, significantly enriching the repertoire of her instrument.

She devotes a large part of her career to recording and publishing modern editions of her most remarkable finds, many of which come from Italy, certainly one of the first countries to have given the cello a place as a soloist, until then regarded as an accompanying instrument.

In order to be able to play this eclectic range of music on the ideal instruments, Elinor commissioned several from her favourite craftsmen, including internationally renowned Quebec luthier Francis Beaulieu, who designed a five-string cello and a viola da gamba for her.

Alone on stage, Elinor, surrounded by her instruments, invites us to discover their distinct personalities and colours, while telling the story of each of them.

Tous les matins d’Elinor is a reference to the film Tous les matins du monde, a gentle nod to baroque music. His show is a recital that is both intimate and full of discoveries, featuring some of the finest works by Dall’Abaco, Bach, Colombi, Supriani, Ortiz, Telemann and Dallapiccola, as well as the piece Les Pleurs (Sainte-Colombe) from the film.

This free show is presented by the City of Rimouski, at the Galerie d’art Léonard-Parent, on Thursday 28 August, at 7 pm. First come, first served, maximum of 45 people.
